Christmas at church is wonderful. Though it is a very busy time of year for everyone, and many of us get quite tired in the leadup, I always find myself getting energised as Christmas approaches. I always loved the ‘Christmas magic’ as I grew up. But since coming to know Jesus, I have found that the magic is actually real – the sense of awe and wonder that I felt as a kid, not knowing exactly why, actually has a source at the deepest level of reality. God became one of us at Christmas – that is a true wonder!
One wonderful way we will celebrate and share this is our 6pm Family Service. As well as singing carols and Christmas songs, for the first time this year we will have a Christmas play acted out by the kids of our church, and other kids who come along. The play is based on a picture book which follows a somewhat grumpy innkeeper. He gradually comes to see something of the wonder of just who it was that was lying in that manger on the first Christmas day. I have read that picture book, and admit that I was taken by surprise how moving it is when this innkeeper gets over himself and into the true glory of Christmas. I hope that will be the case for many of us this Christmas!
All are welcome to join us – we’d love to have you there! Kids can come along dressed up as animals from the nativity, shepherds, angels, or Magi (wise men – or women!).
Love to see you there!
Chris
